“Knife Making Experience” with me 🙂
If you’re tired of watching YouTube videos and want to try it out in reality, or perhaps you’re already on the path but got stuck, this might be perfect for you. Check out the summary video, you can read the details below. If you have any questions, you can reach me through one of the contact methods. Let’s go! 🙂
- 2-day course, maximum 2 participants at a time. If someone purchases for 1 person, we will pair them with another participant
- We provide safety equipment and practice materials
- A complete knife will be made with handle scale design and wooden handle
The course price includes:
- 2 hot meals
- Equipment (but participants should bring ‘work clothes’ that they don’t mind getting dirty or damaged!)
- Practice materials
- Theoretical and practical instruction
- A knife worth approximately ~$100-120
- ‘Pannónia’ model (handle scale design, full tang knife)
- Basic wood handle (wenge, oak, ovangkol, bubinga, walnut, zebrawood, purple heart, etc. – these types may vary depending on current stock!)
What I ask is that everyone in the workshop listens to me, especially regarding safety! We don’t touch anything without permission… questions are allowed, in fact, mandatory! 😉
Basic DIY skills are required!! (drilling, metal saw knowledge, file usage, etc.)
The experience can be organized with 2 participants signing up, and at least one phone conversation is required beforehand so I can assess the affinity and interest. This is in both of our interests. 🙂
Scheduling is subject to discussion.
Rules
- Basic metalworking knowledge and experience required (cutting, drilling, filing, etc.). This event is for amateur, hobby makers or those who have already tried or worked with similar tasks. Two days is not enough to compensate for or acquire practice with sawing, filing, grinding, etc. Having these skills is a basic requirement for making a knife. We adapt methods and procedures to a beginner’s needs and abilities, and assistance will be continuously available during the making phases – upon request, error correction, taking over more difficult processes, etc. – but it’s important to have minimal experience with hand tools and machines. Participants should not be afraid of working with grinding machines, drill presses, etc.
- Participants agree to follow all instructions and accept all advice and suggestions! This serves both safety and good time management of the limited available time. If anything is unclear or incomprehensible, questions must be asked (in fact, it’s mandatory 🙂).
- During knife making, we work with machines that can be dangerous despite all safety measures, so the risk of injury exists. We do everything for safety, but the participant is responsible for their own physical integrity, and only they are.
- Basic safety equipment is provided (but you can bring your own), such as work gloves, dust masks, safety glasses. Beyond this, work is done in personal clothing (preferably something the person doesn’t mind getting dirty or damaged, etc.) and shoes (which must be closed-toe shoes!).
- During the event, no outside persons may be present in the workshop and its surroundings. (Partly for accident prevention, partly due to space and time constraints, but also ethically questionable to participate in education in this manner…)
- Photo and audio recording cannot take place without the organizers’ consent.
- The price includes making one knife. The knife:
- ‘Pannónia’ model (handle scale design, full tang knife)
- Made from Sleiner/N690/Becut steel (but I reserve the right to change this depending on current stock)
- Basic wood handle (wenge, oak, ovangkol, bubinga, walnut, zebrawood, purple heart, etc. – these types may vary depending on current stock!)
All other steels and handle materials are subject to discussion and will be paid for in addition to the course price!
- We provide two hot meals and beverages, but beyond this, participants must take care of food and other needs.
- The event is two days (~2×8 hours) which we handle flexibly, but preferably keeping to the 8-hour workday.
- The agreed and written price is valid for the booked course date! Date changes due to causes beyond the participants’ control cannot affect the price (e.g., illness, my other absences, etc. causing date delays). If we cannot agree on a date, I reserve the right to change the price, as I cannot guarantee the same price at a later date, months or even a year later.
Best regards: Imre Palcsesz, Knife Maker
